I just started a 30-day campaign (the max number of days Kickstarter recommends) to determine interest in a book of aphorisms and to buy back some of my time.
What else have I tried? Well, I’ve floated this idea about a book of aphorisms to a number of folks on social media and sent queries to few publishers who seemed like good matches for this project.
Who am I to write a book of aphorisms? This is one of the challenges I’ve wrestled with the hardest. One of the reasons is simply age. Writing a book of aphorisms has the vibe of a graybeard activity. That being said, much like starting ONE ART when I felt I had found my way as an editor, I believe I have spent enough of my life reflecting on books of aphorisms (and related styles) to have developed a compass, an approach.
My long-time love of E.M. Cioran, James Richardson’s ‘Vectors’, Sarah Manguso’s ‘300 Arguments’, and a general love of famous quotes and cherry-picking lines from texts has led me to want to try my hand at this artform.
For those who can afford to do so, here is a link to the Kickstarter campaign.
It would mean a lot to me if you would help spread the word and determine if, in fact, this is a text that others would like to see come to life.
With Gratitude,
~ Mark
I love aphorisms. I find the idea irresistible.
