The decline in author pay and just how little writers make per year (myself included).
Relatedly, why writers really can benefit from winning prizes. A reason to consider, you know, not primarily giving them to those who went to Ivy League schools (implying they likely already benefit from generational wealth and connections).

“[…] We reach for the stars.” – The West Wing
“The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels, but every time we think we have measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes and we reach for the stars.” – The West Wing
“Over the past half century, we've split the atom, we've spliced the gene and we've roamed Tranquility Base. We've reached for the stars and never have we been closer to having them in our grasp.” – The West Wing

Germany will pay Holocaust survivors across the world over $1 billion in 2024
“Germany will pay Holocaust survivors over $1.4 billion next year, which will go toward one-time payments for the survivors and welfare programs.”
I’m not saying this needs to happen; however, it seems worth questioning whether restitution should be paid to families who lost loved ones in the Holocaust.
I’m thinking, in part, of the ongoing question of how to navigate reparations for Black Americans who are the descendants of slaves.
Rep. Cori Bush introduces bill on reparations for Black Americans
In this bill, “legislation [is] calling for $14 trillion in reparations for Black American.”
I believe, to the best of my recollection, that I have seen suggestions as high as 39 trillion for reparations.
For reference, the U.S. federal budget has been in the range of 1.6T to 6.8T since 1996.
