Difficult material:
Real people. Real stories. Being unhoused, in the cycle of addiction, the fear of treatment for fear of being treated as a junky.

Some information about the U.S. current state of homelessness / unhoused persons
A good opportunity to look at reasons why “Housing First” initiatives had have an impact and worked. Providing a person with a roof over their head means a small amount of security and dependability. This means less of a person’s bandwidth (aka. headspace) is taken up by concerns for scarcity and planning basic next steps to get through the next few hours, the night, the next day.
“The life expectancy for people surviving homelessness is half that of the general public.”
The health and life quality issues associated with being homeless or otherwise unhoused are well-reported and no in question. Living with constant uncertainly, often with exposure to the elements or unsafe conditions, is terrible for physical and mental health.
“it’s not only a matter of social justice, but sound economics. “It could cost about $30,000 or more to have a patient on a hospital ward for a month, or nearly $7,000 to be in a sheltering system for the month versus $2,500 to $2,800 per month for supportive housing.”
“Many hospitals realize it’s cheaper to provide a month of housing than to keep patients for a single night.”
“My point back is try to spend a week in a shelter, sleep there and then let me know how your mental health is doing a week later.”
