I believe it is essential we take this position— regardless if, say, it turns out there is additionally a potential future for human life (and maybe civilization) on Mars.
Importantly, we are not alone here. Humans are just one species on Earth. We’re the most dominant species and the most destructive. This does not mean we are the most important. In fact, I can think of very few species that would not greatly benefit from a lack of humanity. Admittedly, there are a fair number of domestic dogs and at least a handful of domestic cats that would be saddened by our sudden lack of presence.
Funds should be allocated towards improving living conditions on Earth, for extant lifeforms as well as future living organisms that do not deserve to inherit a poor environment.
Let’s focus on the prevention of Earth becoming one giant Superfund site.
