I wonder at Mulholland Drive ranked as it is, although it's always been a question to me why I like it so much. It makes no sense, yet Lynch's mastery of the scene is captivating.

Art school seems to have paid off for Lynch. He's effective at creating striking, memorable scenes.

Twin Peaks is his best, in my opinion. Sadly before my time... I wish I was there for the audience reaction to that airing on network television... must have really weirded folks out.

Weirded out is right; and pissed us off. There was really no way to end that plot that wasn't disappointing, much like Stephen King novels.

Quite a dig on King. I'm a fan of his work... but yes... some of the stories go off in odd directions... I've spent quite a bit of time with King's writing including reading the entirety of the Dark Tower series and Four Past Midnight aloud.

Ha! Maybe Twin Peaks was simply the beginning of shows pulling this maneuver... Thinking of LOST, Breaking Bad, GOT (from what I'm told)... many modern shows seem to having controversial endings. My personal theory is that there are too many writers in the writing room... the characters become somewhat "schizophrenic" -- inconsistent in their choices and behaviors. It's baffling to the audience and results in loss of interest.
