Intriguing article, Mark. I'm skeptical that the Elon/Donald wedlock will last long; he hates it when someone else has the spotlight. I'm thinking a discussion on guardrails for AI development will heat up this year, as will more demands for restrictions on adult websites, including those who show the whole statue of David. A national ban on abortion is bound to generate discussion, and perhaps the financial woes that will come from supporting public and private schools simultaneously might be part of the attempt to rein in public spending.

Your last point about schools has me thinking. We're failing schools in so many ways.

It remains staggering that Roe was overturned. It's been pointed out by many that States, on the ground, are embracing Democrat-related policies in spite of voting them out of office at the Federal level. I find this at least somewhat heartening. I was surprised to hear Heather Cox Richardson say that we haven't had a Progressive/Left leaning candidate for Dems since the Ike Eisenhower era. I do agree that Democrat candidates have been moderate though my sense was they leaned at least a bit left/progressive in policy and not Center leaning Right which seems to be the reality. At the end of the day, I want two viable parties. At least two. We cannot have a functional system with flailing parties that have vague stances.

I sure hope the discussion broadens when it comes to guardrails on AI. This is the most significant area for which people as Digital Citizens have been completely left out of the conversation. I'm thinking here in the vein of Tristan Harris who founded the Center for Humane Technology.

We'll see about Trump and "Elonia" falling out. Probably. Trump loves to fire people. You gotta hire 'em first.

The Right has a disturbing ability to posit itself as the "wholesome" party while also consistently engaging in R. Kelly / Diddy / Epstein -esque antics. They're are pros at getting away with it. Stunning. Here, I'm separating The Right from MAGA. MAGA doesn't try (or need to try) to hide the hatred/racism/xenophobia.

There's this since right now that Trump is trying to distract from his criminal trials with imperialist banter about buying other countries (which history tells us we'd end up given back with apologies after being scolded by the rest of the globe). Honestly, I'd be surprised if Trump was concerned. By now he must be aware that his followers have zero concern about his personal crimes. He is most certainly looking forward to committing many more crimes with the expectation that his followers will protect him as he has pledged he will do for them with authoritarian flair.
