I write poetry. I really do not enjoy the grind of submitting poems to journals- but every poet wants an audience. If AI takes over the mainstream journals? Samizdat hand written zines will become an underground poetry scene !
For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would submit work they didn't write. As if slipping one past the guards is in some way a 'win'. The whole reason we write poetry is because the writing sustains us in some way. We submit to share with others who might get something from it. Certainly, we don't do it for glory or money. So what would possess someone to bypass the writing for the submitting, arguably the least pleasurable experience in the life of a poet? Got me.
Agreed, it's bizarre that people would submit work that is not their own. **Especially** if it is not for pay. Not a lot of bragging rights to be had in this little corner of the world...
My fear is that we look to the past for a sense of the speed and magnitude of the change AI will bring about: the way taming of horses changed the dimensions of the world? the railroads changed the speed of development? The way computers put pencil pushers out of business? I'm grasping here for examples of exponential growth, which I believe we are witnessing, and which threatens to exceed our ability to control or keep up with. I see a near future where publishers no longer need writers, when producers no longer need scripts or actors, where the competition to be a fireman or plumber is fierce because all the intellectual jobs can be done by AI. The drive to compile fortunes will cause corporations to embrace AI as fast as it becomes available, and the money saved by this is unlikely to be distributed to those disenfranchised.
"AI" (as we're calling this now) is a sea change, a gamechanger, a paradigm shift (pick your favorite corporate speak) for a massive societal upheaval.
"Pay to play" is a colloquial phrase referring to the common $3 (sometimes more) fee to submit to a lit mag... using a submission database or Submittable, etc.
The problem is that people are using AI to write their poems and then submitting them as if they are original work.
Oh I see. Tx. AI for plagiarism. Unprincipled poets. They should be put in the stocks in the village square, tagged for a new subcircle of hell. Unless they are the future and it’s here.
To be honest, that’s one of the main reasons we charged a nominal submission fee. That and the extra extraordinary fee we have to pay Submittable every year.
ONE ART is fee-free so we receive a lot of submissions. The fear is that people can use AI to write poems rapidly and submit them as original art... It'll be more clear if you listen to the podcast episode.
Just the idea of using AI as a first reader—ugh. It makes literary magazine submissions feel as soulless as submitting job applications.
I agree. It would be all too similar as sending hundreds of applications into the void.
In fact I doubt I'd submit to journals which adopted that practice.

I DO think zine culture is very cool. Just saw this... and am hoping someone cool will take over.

Mark sorry my comments vanished from the screen before I could complete it.
Sorry. That happens to me sometimes, too. It's frustrating.

The writing should be the most enjoyable part. On the plus side, AI can't take that from us.

Unfortunately, I think you're on to something...

'Scam' is another word that comes to mind.
Doesn’t AI pay to play? If not it should. At least 10 times more than human submitters.

Oof... I was worried it was something like that. I'm sure Rattle pays something obscene given Tim gets about 300 subs a day last I heard.
Ha, agreed! So frustrating... as if the community needs more problems 🙄😑
I'm not quite sure what you mean.
How does AI get submitted? Evidently it doesn’t have to use a credit card.
Oh no, you misunderstand, AI is not submitting on its own... thankfully. Not yet. It's not sentient... and it's not spamming on its own.
To be honest, that’s one of the main reasons we charged a nominal submission fee. That and the extra extraordinary fee we have to pay Submittable every year.
Yeah... I know CLMP has a deal for a discount on Submittable... but depending on the number of submissions... I have heard it's very expensive.
We play $1500 a year… !
ONE ART receives ~ 15-50 subs per day... Guessing that would cost a small fortune 😅
