You have some control over your future self. This might sound a bit strange. It’s true though.
We don’t often spend much, if any, time thinking about the person we are going to become.
Usually, we engage in forms of self-sabotage, hindering our future selves with selfish actions made by our present self.
A Buddhist might tell you that there’s not really a true self in this life. Instead, we’re simply moving along a path. In this framework, the self is a sort of mirage. Our actions, our free will, and our personal responsibility are all in question.
There might be truth to this, but it’s not how we operate on a day-to-day basis. We’re not wired for this. We’re too much in our heads and we are too much embodied beings. At least, speaking for your average Western individual.
Back to our future selves, there’s a lesson to consider. Instead of self-sabotaging ourselves as we move along the unseen path, we can do ourselves small favors.
Self-friendly favors include maintaining good sleep hygiene, daily hydration, healthy eating habits, engaging in regular exercise, keeping your body in motion and not sitting (or standing) for long periods of time without a break. Everything in moderation, right?
You already knew this… but do you follow through?
You will not need many vacations from your work, or your life, or vacations after your vacations, if you learn to manage your days based on your own natural rhythms and how you move through the world.
Integrate purpose, tactics for accomplishments and small victories, and you’re well on your way to optimizing yourself and your time to become more effective and satisfied with your day to day.
